A FUCKING ELEPHANT/ EL DRUGSTORE
Two experimental New Jersey bands share a nine-track split disc here, as A Fucking Elephant and El Drugstore team up for a noisy excursion. Up first is A Fucking Elephant, who provide five tracks of freewheeling progressively derived post-rock served both with and without vocals, each showing equal amounts of intensity with a plethora of fretboard intricacy. Up next are El Drugstore, a Garden State trio with a meatier guitar tone and a similar disposition for dissonant rhythms and non-linear structures, exhibiting deconstructive jazz with a sinister snarl. Definitely not for the average listener, this duo challenges the senses with dazzling dabs of musical non-conformity for those who enjoy a bending of the rules now and then.
