Texas quartet Leaf really dig on the spectrum of '90s alternative rock, as this group's six-track endeavor harkens back to a time when Stone Temple Pilots and Alice in Chains were gaining ground ("Who Is It?") with a few of today's tricks fleshing out their recently deemed retro sound. FIRST KILL showcases the wares from a troupe whose ready for rock radio melodic side is accompanied with everything from snarling guitars and carnival keyboards ("Game Box Kid") to a clumsy attempt at industrial ("Bear Tracks"), displaying a retread of bands like Filter and Gravity Kills with scattered shots of quirkiness mixed in ("See What Happens") that salvage this offering from being totally cast as a watered down version of a music from an era gone by.
