Southern-bred female fronted unit Royal Thunder dole out prairie blues with Gothic charm and smoky beats on latest release CVI. Excavating a sound from a mixed bag of music ranging from classics like Led Zeppelin, Janis Joplin, Heart, and Black Sabbath, this Atlanta-based quartet took their time when constructing sinewy grooves with soaring chanteuse-esque vocals wandering through eerie paths below the Mason-Dixon line. Throwing psychedelic undertones into the mix while experimenting with modern indie rock meanderings intermittently, this album sometimes gets too ambitious for its own well being and would greatly benefit from an improved sense of self-editing. Nonetheless, Royal Thunderís demonstration of raw power, understanding of rock history, and command of vintage tones delivers the sounds of yesteryears gone by with a keen eye set to what lies ahead. -MikeSOS
