CHROME DIVISION
THIRD ROUND KNOCKOUT
NUCLEAR BLAST

Enlisting a new vocalist has assisted Norwegian black metal all-star side project Chrome Division to spice up their debauchery-laden death ‘n roll heard on THIRD ROUND KNOCKOUT. Boosted by a shot of hair metal melodies and Southern rock charm thanks to new frontman Paul Mathiesen (using the alias “Shady Blue”) and his soulful screams and gritty delivery, Chrome Division mix their concoction of hedonistic lyrics and downtuned metal with a discernibly commercial rock sound that tries too hard, meeting somewhere between Saliva, Hellyeah, and Motorhead. Injecting blues-inflected boogie (“The Magic Man”) and clever samples (“Long Distance Call Girl”) into Shagrath’s sinisterly shredding hard rock riffs, this 10-track disc is hook happy and deceptively heavy but stumbles through clichés and treads familiar ground a bit too much across the span of this release, diminishing the effects of their distinct snarl and tasty chops (“Satisfy My Soul”).
