WOODS OF YPRES
WOODS 4: THE GREEN ALBUM
EARACHE

Originally self-released, the massive near 80-minute offering WOODS IV: THE GREEN ALBUM by downtrodden Canadian quartet Woods of Ypres gets a re-release courtesy of Earache Records. This cult squad boasts a bleak disposition with a morose sound that melds morbid Goth rock, glacial black metal, and haunting doom metal, sounding like bastardized concoction of Type O Negative, Paradise Lost, and Katatonia (“Don’t Open the Wounds”). Heart wrenching lyrics and gloomy clean vocals over a thick mainly downtempo rhythm section are the most prominent weapons in this band’s somber assault, yet crisp guitarwork adds elements of melodrama to the album’s overall melancholic nature. Depressively laden in despair, despite the tendency to meander at times, this album resonates with a discernibly down and out vibe while championing a drab outlook that comes off clunky at times but hits the marks of misery and self loathing more often than not.
